WOD: 7/26/2012 & New Fitness App Review

Last night was really boring and I could not for the life of me, get to sleep. So , of course, I ended up on my phone browsing the app store to check for different apps. When it comes to working out, I like to try new things to keep me going so I was checking out the reviews on a few different fitness apps and ran across this app called Ease into 5k. I'm pretty hesitant when it comes to purchasing new apps, but this one has some pretty good reviews so I went for it.

So far I like it. It has 8 weeks of workouts where you only have to do it 3 days out of the week. For me, I chose a MWF schedule. After you finish the 8 weeks you can move on to 30, 45, or 60 minute non-stop runs! This app is definitely meant to help you gradually improve your endurance while running. The 60 minute non-stop will definitely be a goal I want to achieve!

What I like the most:

  • I love the alerts. It so much easier to do the intervals when you have alerts telling you to run or walk rather than looking at your watch. It can be killer sometimes and when I notice I'm not even close to finishing, I can get discouraged so I avoid looking at the time as much as possible. I also love the "You are half way done!" alert!
  • It has GPS. This is nice to have especially on the days when it isn't too hot outside to workout on the streets. It tells you your pace, distance, and average pace.
  • It shows you a timer and it's color coded. This is awesome because if you miss the alerts, you know which step you're on and the timer is good for those who want to see how much longer they have. It also tells you over all workout time.
  • It links to your iPod. Yay! No need to miss out on your motivational music. My favorite workout song is Destiny's Child: Lose Your Breathe, LOL!
  • Volume Control. You can adjust the volume of the music and the volume of the alerts. This way you don't miss the alerts by having your music too loud.
I don't have any complaints so far. I never expected it to have more than what it offers. I wasn't looking for a calories counter because I have plenty and just downloaded another {I'll post on that one soon}. I can post my workouts to Twitter or Facebook and keep up with my journal so that is all I really need from this app. Should it be free? I can see where someone would say it's a waste of money but for the technology that is integrated in to the app, I personally think it was worth the money--which was $2.99.

So here is my workout:

*Start with a 5 minute warm-up, then repeat the following interval 3 times. Then finish with a 5 minute cool down.

Untitled

  • First Interval: Run 9 mph, Walk 3 mph
  • Second Interval: Run 8 mph, Walk 3 mph
  • Third Interval: Run 7 mph, Walk 3 mph
  • Total Calories Burned: 256

If you are an advanced runner already or just curious, this company also makes other apps that have good reviews and are also only $2.99:
